Punch, J. D. (University of Minnesota, St. Paul), J. C. Olson, Jr., and J. V. Scaletti. Amino acid utilization by Alcaligenes viscolactis for growth and slime production. J. Bacteriol. 89:1521-1525. 1965.-The ability of Alcaligenes viscolactis to utilize amino acids in a basal salts solution (K(2)HPO(4), KH(2)PO(4), MgSO(4), MnSO(4), FeSO(4), NaCl) was studied. Of 27 amino acids, only l-asparagine, l-glutamic acid, l-aspartic acid, l-glutamine, l-proline, and l-tyrosine supported growth sufficient to give a viscous supernatant solution. l-Proline and l-tyrosine, singly or combined, fulfilled the carbon, nitrogen, and energy requirements for growth and slime production. None of eight inorganic nitrogenous compounds supported growth with lactose as the carbon source. The addition of l-asparagine, l-aspartic acid, or l-glutamine to l-tyrosine or l-proline, singly or combined, did not increase growth or slime production, indicating no nutritional interactions among these amino acids. Neither lactose nor glucose was found to be required or utilized by A. viscolactis in a medium containing basal salts, l-proline, l-tyrosine, and lactose or glucose. This was established by the fact that total carbohydrate and total reducing activity remained constant during growth and slime production.

One-Factor-at-a-Time Optimization of Polyhydroxybutyrate Production and Growth of Alcaligenes eutrophus by Altering Culture Parameters and Incubation Time

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are bioplastics derived from renewable resources such as vegetable oils, corn starch, or microbes. The polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a short-chain-length PHA, and the most important bioplastic produced by certain microorganisms in the presence of excess carbon sources. In this study batch cultivation of Alcaligenes eutrophus with the aim of increasing PHB production ...

Effect of Dietary Protein Sources on Lamb’s Performance: A Review

Protein and energy are the two major components of feed that influence performance of the growing and fattening lambs. Provision of the quality of protein in the lamb’s diet does not only improve the animal performance but also ensures profitable animal production. Different vegetable protein sources are used to formulate the rations for growing and fattening lambs. These protein sources differ...

Siderophore production by Alcaligenes faecalis and its application for growth promotion in Arachis hypogaea

A rhizobacterium isolated from groundnut rhizosphere and identified as Alcaligenes faecalis BCCM 2374 produced siderophore during 24 h submerged growth in modified succinic acid medium (SM) prepared in tap water without deferration. For the optimized production of siderophore in the presence of starch and sucrose, the optimum parameters found were as follows: slight acidic pH (5.5), 35C tempera...

Fermentative Lactic Acid Production by Lactobacilli: Moser and Gompertz Kinetic Models

Lactic acid production in a batch submerged fermentation process by five Lactobacilli: bulgaricus, casei, lactis, delbrueckii and fermentum in lactose fortified whey culture were investigated. Kinetic behavior of Lactobacilli growth rate and lactose utilization was studied based on the Moser and Gompertz kinetic models. Trendline tool in Excel software was applied for fitness assessment of the ...
